DENVER - Dr. Jan Roy knew she’d be spending the week speaking at a conference at Metropolitan State College. What she didn’t know was that her beau of 12 years was planning a trip there too.

“We’ve never had a Valentine’s Day where he didn’t find me. And I’ve lived in eight states,” said Roy of Bernard Turner, with whom she’s had an on-and-off relationship for 12 years.

Even though it was more than a decade ago, Turner recalls hearing “bells and angels,” when he first held Roy’s hand.

“I said to myself, ‘I really like this girl,’” he said.

What happened to Turner isn’t uncommon. According to psychologists, for some people it can be unavoidable.

“Some people will feel on the first date that they’ve already fallen in love,” said Dr. Mary Ann Watson, assistant chair of the Department of Psychology at Metro State College and a psychologist who specializes in relationships.

Watson says studies show that people who feel as though they are falling in love often experience a chemical release in the brain.

“When you’re first falling in love, it’s dopamine that takes over the brain,” said Watson. “And dopamine doesn’t allow us to make very good decision.”

She adds some interesting findings from MRI studies.

“When you look at brain studies, you can’t tell much difference between a brain that is registering ‘falling in love’ and a brain that has mental illness,” said Watson.

Watson also says a first kiss is sometimes more important than couples think.

“The majority of studies of people say they have at least once or twice rejected someone based on that first kiss,” she said.

She advises anyone seeking out true love to wait for the dopamine levels to drop and allow what she calls the “passionate” stage of love to pass.

“That typically doesn’t last longer than six months or a year,” Watson said.

The other level of love, which Watson said can be harder to achieve, is the “companionate” stage.

“Do you like this person? Are you companions? Does the relationship make sense?” asked Watson.

Watson says, usually people are drawn to others who are most like them for long-term relationships.

“It’s true, opposites attract,” she said. “But opposites don’t stay together very long.”

Roy and Turner are content with their relationship as-is.

“After all these years, he’s still romantic,” she said. “He still makes my heart skip a beat.”

“Stop lying, it’s cold out!”

The temperature is currently 3 degrees F outside (-16C). So, why do some people still insist on not wearing a coat or worse yet, wear shorts when outside?

While standing at a corner, bundled up in hat, gloves, scarf and wool coat, still freezing from the bitter wind, I ask a few clad in shorts passers by, “why the shorts, aren’t you cold?” Invariably, a grin appears on their face as they no doubt anticipate your question having been asked it several times throughout the morning.

“Oh, my legs don’t get cold!”, is the standard response, grin on face turning to full smile, then smile freezing in place quite literally. Then they continue on their way before you catch their teeth starting to chatter. Because face it, they’re cold. They have to keep moving to try to warm up before the frost bite sets in!

Just once I wish this weather challenged wearer of shorts would stay around long enough for me to say to them, “Stop lying! It’s cold outside! You’re cold!”

I don’t know which I find most annoying, shorts in the dead of winter, or wool hats worn in 95 degree temperatures during the midst of a hot summer day. I know there are much more important things to worry about, the economy, global warming (maybe not today), terrorism, and so forth. But maybe if we each try to tackle the simple things first, such as wearing attire appropriate to the seasonal conditions, then maybe we can work our way up to the more important issues of the day.

Seven-year-old Xiao Qing’s parents weren’t married when she was born. Considered illegitimate by the state, she’s not allowed to go to school until her mother pays a €900 fee. Not so easy when you’re unemployed…

The parents of children born out of wedlock are forced to pay a hefty fine to make them “legitimate” citizens. Without this, the children can’t go to school until they get their “hukou”, a kind of residency permit delivered by the local authorities’ family planning department. The permit comes at a cost of 9000RMB (€900) - a high price for the potential consequences of sex before marriage.

Xiao Qing’s mother, unemployed and abandoned by Xiao’s father, couldn’t afford to pay the fine. For the past two months she appealed to every relevant authority in Zhuhai (south China) to get her daughter into school. But her plea went unheard by the family planning department, the education department, the sub-district office and the local council. So the single mother tried to catch the attention of the local media. Xiao Qing stood outside Gongbei Xiawan Primary School with a sign that read “I am a local child. I want to receive compulsory education, too!” A local journalist did take pity on the seven-year-old, but when he suggested the idea to his paper they refused it. So Han Tao posted the pictures on his blog. He managed to drum up enough support that the local authorities pledged to allow Xiao to go to school. But when she arrived for her first day, the school refused her, saying they didn’t have enough places.
